With her stunning photograph of local landmark ‘The Lonely Shepherd’, Club member Jen Price is overall winner of the Club’s 2025 annual photographic competition.
Judge Peter says: “It looks deceptively simple but needed imagination and planning to execute successfully”.
Attracting thirty eight entries, the competition this year challenged Club members to tell stories of the Club in action, to show the drama of mountain weather, to portray the unique character and beauty of a mountain, hill or crag, and to demonstrate adventure in wild places.

The “Club in Action” category is always keenly contested. The lead walker in ‘Snaky’ by Haydn Griffiths draws the viewer’s eye deeper into the picture to follow the snake-like line of people walking across a hillside. Subtle hints of sky, mist and distant sunlight add atmosphere and convey a sense of good day out. It captures a moment in the gaze and posture of the lead walker.
In the “Mountain Weather” category, there’s drama in John W Jones’ photograph, “It’s coming”. A wall of cloud sweeps towards snow-dusted hills that seem diminutive. Elemental power combines with subtleties for those who look closely.
Jen Price’s portrayal of “The Lonely Shepherd” was the most visually striking photograph in the popular category “Portrait of a Mountain”. Her photo was enhanced by choosing to render it in monochrome. Jen takes the overall prize in the 2025 photo competition.
“Adventure in Wild Places” is the category that attempts to capture the essence of places that we wouldn’t or couldn’t visit as a matter of routine (or perhaps choose to visit at unusual times or in unusual circumstances for a different sense of adventure). “High Tide” by Haydn Griffiths shows a sense of humour that works well, reminding us that climbing and mountain adventures should be fun.
