Ten-year olds Elen and Eleri, daughters of members Lowri Gwyn and Sara Davies/Ian Goudge spent their Easter school holidays at a local climbing wall, raising money for Climbers Against Cancer.
They climbed the equivalent of the height of Ben Nevis – all for charity – in just two days. Here’s what they had to say about it, in their own words:
“We’re Elen and Eleri. We’re 10 years old and enjoy climbing together. Last year we learned about Climbers Against Cancer. Both Elen’s Mum and Dad’s families have been touched by cancer, and someone Eleri knew recently died of cancer. So we put our love of climbing to good use by raising money for Climbers Against Cancer.
During the Easter holidays (2024) we went to the climbing wall together and between us we climbed the height of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. That’s 1,345 metres (4,412 feet for you oldies) so we each climbed 672 metres. That’s climbing about 80 routes each. We’re so happy that so many people sponsored us. Thank you so much. We raised more than £1,100 for Climbers Against Cancer. “

As the girls put in their final push at Boulders East/Newport Road for their climbing challenge, a camera crew from S4C filmed them and they made it on to TV.
Dad’s Ian and Rob helped out with belaying, providing snacks and general encouragement.
It’s great to see such enthusiasm and commitment from two fine young climbers who could well become Club members themselves one day. Well done girls.
END.
