Walk: Great Cwm Horseshoe. 18km/11.2miles, 840m/2755ft ascent (Moderate)

Our walk, which begins from the High School / Leisure Centre car park in Crickhowell (9:30am. OS Explorer map OL13, grid reference SO 216185) is essentially a high-level walk rising to and around the rim of the Great Cwm (Cwm Mawr in Welsh). This large, steep-sided bowl is cut into the south-western aspect of the Pen Allt Mawr / Pen Cerrig Calch massif of the Black Mountains. It’s best seen from the village of Bwlch to the west.
We will walk out of Crickhowell following the Beacons Way as it makes its way around the southwest side of the massif and across the bottom of the Great Cwm until we are able to ascend the ridge known as Bryniog. This will take us to the subsidiary summit of Pen Gloch-y-pibwr before eventually reaching Pen Allt-mawr summit (719m). From here we will turn to walk towards Pen Cerrig-calch (701m). We will hopefully have great views in all directions. After briefly touching the trig point on Pen Cerrig-calch we will begin our descent by briefly skirting part of the rim of the Great Cwm before heading down over Darren to Cwm Cumbeth, which we will then follow back into Crickhowell.
Although we do not anticipate it will be needed, please bring your head torch.
