50k for 50 years (50k50y) Anniversary Challenge, 50km/31miles with 1,250m/4,100feet ascent (Challenging)

Pete and Alex have put together “50k for 50 years” (50k50y), a route for a 50km/31miles one-day challenge walk on Saturday, 27 June as part of the Club’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
The proposed route starts and finishes in Pontypool, making an anticlockwise circuit of the hills above Pontypool, Abersychan/Talywain and Blaenavon. In all, a nice traverse of eleven summits (with distance from start), as follows:
– Mynydd Garn Wen, 4.9km
– Mynydd Garnclochdy, 6.7km
– Mynydd y Garn-fawr, 11.8km
– Blorenge, 14.2km
– Mynydd Coety, 24.3km
– Mynydd Varteg Fawr, 26.6km
– Gwastad, 30.6km
– Byrgwm, 32.8km
– Mynydd Llanhilleth, 34.6km
– Cefn-y-Crib, 37.9km
– Mynydd Maen, 44.5km
With an early start and 1,250m/4,100feet of ascent, it will be a long day (15 hours); although hopefully one to remember.
If interested in taking part, please get in touch with Pete.
If you’d like to walk just part of the route, there is a regular and frequent bus-service (X24) in both directions between Pontypool and Blaenavon that allows you to join/leave the route at several points. If interested, get in touch with Pete.
And if you’d like to offer support and cheer participants along the way – perhaps delivering refreshments – again, please contact Pete.
