First aid outdoors – are you prepared?

First on the scene of an accident? Do you know what to do? Learn to save a life before professional help arrives. Attend an Outdoor First Aid course.

Club members, Haydn Griffiths and Mick Learoyd are the latest two members1 to gain the FAA Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid, valid for three years. Over an intensive two days, facilitated by Crosfield Outdoors in Crickhowell, Haydn and Mick learnt how to deal with everything from accidental penetration and bone injuries to splinter removal and choking, hypothermia and heart attack.

With specific emphasis on improvisation in remote locations, Haydn and Mick both found the two-day course to be useful, informative and very relevant for those active in the outdoors environment. Mick said: “From the classroom learning and group discussions in Crickhowell Scout Hall, we were able to put our learning into practice in surprisingly realistic outdoor scenarios”. Mick went on to say: “We would thoroughly recommend the course, both for first time attendees and for those wishing to refresh their skills and certificate. As the Scout motto says …’Be Prepared‘.”

  1. Around 15-20% of members of gwentmc are first aid trained. The Club has an excellent safety record but should an accident happen during a Club event, it’s likely a first aider will be on-hand to provide immediate care and support. ↩︎
