SUMMARY:Walk: Fan Frynych/Fan Fawr Linear. 16km/10miles\, 830m/2725ft ascent (Moderate)
DESCRIPTION:Join Alex for this linear route graded moderate (16km/10miles\, 830m/2725ft ascent) which will traverse Fan Frynych and Fan Fawr in the Central Brecon Beacons. \nStarting at Storey Arms\, we will take the 09:23 T4 bus service towards Brecon. Alighting in Libanus we will make our way across Mynydd Illtyd Common\, passing by the National Park Visitor Centre to arrive at the foot of the northeast ridge of Fan Frynych. Ascending the ridge\, we reach the summit trig point of Fan Frynych. From here we can see the way forward towards Fan Fawr\, our next objective. With some rough ground across the moor above Craig Cerrig Gleisiad and Craig y Fro\, we will eventually make a steep ascent to arrive directly at the summit of Fan Fawr. After catching our breath we will turn and descend Cefn yr Henriw. This gently descending ridge meets eventually with the Beacons Way\,  which we will gain after a further short but steep section of rough ground. We turn left and make our way along the Beacons Way to the finish at Pont ar Daf and thence to our cars. \nStart 9:15am\, Bus stop\, Storey Arms\, A470\, Brecon direction. Arrive at the bus stop by 9:15am. Please bring bus fare (cash\, debit card\, bus pass). I believe the fare is £1 but don’t quote me on that. \nCar parking options: There are several places to park cars in the vicinity of Storey Arms: \n\nStorey Arms Car Park (small) opposite the Outdoor Centre. This is where the bus stop is located (SN982202). However\, this car park fills quickly on weekends. Be early and be prepared to park further away and walk for 15 minutes to the bus stop. Alternative parking can be found as follows:\nPont ar Daf Car Park. This is free for National Trust members provided you have your membership card with you. Otherwise\, £7.50\, card payments only\, no cash. The walk finishes here and the walk leader will be parking here.\nAt the large ‘Milestone (MS) layby‘\, some 500m west of Storey Arms. This is a good alternative to Pont ar Daf if you don’t want to pay. It will add 1.5km to your day.\nAlong the verges of the A470. We don’t recommend this option for safety reasons. The A470 here is a designated clearway so you must not obstruct the carriage way.\n\nFor your safety and the safety of other members\, we advise minimum personal equipment requirements for all our walks.

SUMMARY:Weekend trip: Lake District\, Ennerdale
DESCRIPTION:The Club’s long weekend in wild Ennerdale promises early-summer 5-star walking\, climbing and cameraderie in the remote Western Lake District. One of the most remote of the Lake District valleys\, Ennerdale is largely unspoilt with its striking natural features providing an overwhelming character of wildness and tranquility. It’s many years since the Club last visited Ennerdale. \nEnnerdale inspired Wordsworth’s poem ‘The Brothers’ in 1800 after he and Coleridge visited the valley a year earlier\, but perhaps the area’s largest cultural impact has been on the sport of rock climbing. It was at Pillar Rock in Ennerdale that true rock climbing began. Previously thought unclimbable\, local shepherd John Atkinson scaled The Pillar Stone (as it was known then) in 1824 and kick-started a passion that climbers from all over the world share to this day. \nEnnerdale gives access to many of the western fells (20+ Wainrights\, including Pillar\, Steeple\, Kirkfell\, Haystacks\, High Stile and Red Pike as well as many lesser known fells) and also to several important crags for climbing (Pillar Rock\, Ennerdale Face of High Stile\, Raven Crag\, etc.). \nThis long weekend away (Thursday to Sunday) will be based at Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre in the heart of the dale with easy access to surrounding fells and crags. This is a self-catering independent hostel with five dormitories/40 beds. The LGFC has separate male and female toilet/shower facilities\, two lounges\, a dining room with five tables and benches\, and a kitchen. \nOf particular note outside are opportunities for additional recreation – bird-watching\, river swimming and star-gazing. Swimming is not permitted in Ennerdale Water but the nearby River Liza has many pools for swimming. Ennerdale is a Dark Sky Discovery Site\, offering some of the most spectacular night skies in England (on a clear night!). \n

SUMMARY:Walk Saturday: Wolf Moon Walk. 17km/10.6miles\, 740m/2430ft (Moderate)
DESCRIPTION:This night walk will take place late afternoon and evening on Saturday 11th January. A head torch and spare batteries are essential. Please also bring your usual food/drink for a 5- to 6-hour/10mile walk. \nJanuary’s full Moon came to be known as the Wolf Moon because it was believed (incorrectly) that wolves were more likely to be heard howling at this time. This moon is also known as the Moon After Yule\, Ice Moon or Old Moon. Nevertheless\, a near full (95%) Moon and the hope of clear\, cold weather offers the opportunity for a splendidly lit night walk across the central Brecon Beacons. \nFurther details will be sent by email. \n  \nFor your safety and the safety of other members\, we advise minimum personal equipment requirements for all our walks.

SUMMARY:Talk: Exploring the Pennine Way
DESCRIPTION:Despite a lifetime of outdoor walking and climbing activities I’m not a natural backpacker. Making a journey on foot with my home on my back is almost alien to me. That’s not to say I’ve never done it but the occasions have been few\, far between and of short duration. Thus\, it was with trepidation that I embarked upon my Pennine Way adventure in May 2022. What would this 255 mile 17 day journey bring? Would I be capable? Would I cope? Would I finish it? Come along to this talk to hear my story.

SUMMARY:Walk: Mynydd Llangattock 17km/10.5miles (Moderate)
DESCRIPTION:Bleak\, desolate and lonely\, you may think\, but Mynydd Llangattock is home to more than 400 sites of archaeological interest – testament to the busy place it must have been in the past. \nJoin Alex for this moderately graded walk (17km/10.5 miles with 510m/1675ft of ascent) to explore. From our starting point in Crickhowell we will cross the River Usk and meander gently uphill to reach the Darren Cilau quarries. Here\, the intrepid may embark on 6 miles of the country’s hardest underground caving. We will give that a miss though and instead carry on overground to the bleak plateau and trig point of Tŵr Pen-cyrn [Mynydd Llangatwg]. Around the summit area we will visit a few of the archaeological sites\, being the remains of two square shelters\, a hut circle and the site of a battle in 728AD between Ethelred\, King of Mercia and Rhodri ap Idwal\, Prince of Gwynedd – Saxons slugging it out with Britons. \nHeading northwest across open\, possibly wet moorland\, we will aim to make use of what paths we can find to keep our feet as dry as possible while we navigate to a flooded swallow hole and then onward past the Witch’s Pool (Pwll Gwy-rhoc). Eventually\, we will reach the cairn of Eglwys Faen. One hundred metres below sits the well-known cave of the same name. Returning to the base of the Llangattock cliffs (route will depend on conditions) we will pick up an abandoned incline and tramway to make our return to Crickhowell. \nStart time: 9:30am. Start point: Crickhowell High School / Leisure Centre car park. \nFor your safety and the safety of other members\, we advise minimum personal equipment requirements for all our walks.

SUMMARY:Walk: Wild Fforest Fawr 22km/13.5miles\, 835m/2740ft ascent (Moderate/Hard)
DESCRIPTION:In the Middle Ages\, “forest” referred to land demarcated for hunting by the nobility. Lying between the Brecon Beacons to the east and the Carmarthen Fans (Black Mountain) to the west\, Fforest Fawr was once extensively wooded. Populated by red deer\, several areas were also set aside for the breeding of rabbits for meat and fur. Today this desolate upland is known mainly for sheep and cattle farming\, water catchment\, and conifer plantations. With extant prehistoric monuments and sites of scientific interest it is a remote walking area in the middle of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.\n\nStarting from the car park in Ystradfellte village\, our moderate to hard walk of 22km/13.5miles with 835m/2740ft ascent will take us on a journey through the wildest and least frequented parts\, where (weather permitting) we can view the scenic panorama that is the Fforest Fawr mountain range of Fan Gyhirych\, Fan Fraith\, Fan Nedd\, Fan Llia\, and Fan Fawr. We will journey through the rough and wild landscape to ascend and traverse the first three of these summits before returning to our starting point.\n\nStart at 9.30am. OS Explorer Map OL12\, grid reference SN929134.\nFor your safety and the safety of other members\, we advise minimum personal equipment requirements for all our walks.

SUMMARY:Eskdale: Mountain walking\, scrambling and climbing in the Lake District
DESCRIPTION:A long weekend away in early March 2024 (dates are provisional but basically the weekend of 9/10th March 2024) in shared accommodation. \nEskdale is one of the great Lake District dales\, and the Club has not been there for a good few years. There is something for everyone – high level rugged mountain walks\, lower rolling fells and low level scenic walks\, scrambling\, climbing and/or wild swimming for the hardy\, seven pubs\, ticks on multiple lists such as the ‘Wainwrights’\, England’s highest mountain\, etc. As described by the eskdale.info website: \n“The river Esk starts it’s journey to the sea from high in the fells at Esk Hause\, passing through Great Moss at the base of Scafell Pike then tumbling down through a narrow gorge and a series of waterfalls. The stream swelled by many becks becomes a river and encounters it’s first road at the foot of Hardknott Pass England’s steepest road. From here the river takes on a more gentle character with small rapids as it passes through some of the most beautiful oak woodland in Cumbria. The Esk is responsible for carving this remarkable landscape which is both picturesque and dramatic with majestic high peaks\, stunning waterfalls and rolling green hills.” \nNote though\, that the Ravenglass &Eskdale Railway won’t be running at that time of year. \nFor our newer members\, if you’ve not been on a Club weekend before\, these are great opportunities not only to mountain climb in some of the UK’s best mountain areas but also to socialise\, have fun\, and gain confidence/experience with help from other members. If you’re not sure\, please do ask.

SUMMARY:Walk: Great Cwm Horseshoe. 18km/11.2miles\, 840m/2755ft ascent (Moderate)
DESCRIPTION:Our walk\, which begins from the High School / Leisure Centre car park in Crickhowell (9:30am. OS Explorer map OL13\, grid reference SO 216185) is essentially a high-level walk rising to and around the rim of the Great Cwm (Cwm Mawr in Welsh). This large\, steep-sided bowl is cut into the south-western aspect of the Pen Allt Mawr / Pen Cerrig Calch massif of the Black Mountains. It’s best seen from the village of Bwlch to the west. \nWe will walk out of Crickhowell following the Beacons Way as it makes its way around the southwest side of the massif and across the bottom of the Great Cwm until we are able to ascend the ridge known as Bryniog. This will take us to the subsidiary summit of Pen Gloch-y-pibwr before eventually reaching Pen Allt-mawr summit (719m). From here we will turn to walk towards Pen Cerrig-calch (701m). We will hopefully have great views in all directions. After briefly touching the trig point on Pen Cerrig-calch we will begin our descent by briefly skirting part of the rim of the Great Cwm before heading down over Darren to Cwm Cumbeth\, which we will then follow back into Crickhowell. \nAlthough we do not anticipate it will be needed\, please bring your head torch.

SUMMARY:Training (half-day): Finding your way with a map
DESCRIPTION:Setting the map\, staying engaged with the map whilst walking to maintain awareness of current position\, and anticipating what lies ahead are fundamental to being able to find your way successfully in the outdoors.  \nJoin Alex and Keith for an afternoon of informal instruction and practice to develop your skills at Garn Lakes\, Blaenavon on Saturday 13th January 2024\, 1-4.30pm. \nFor a maximum of eight people\, on a first come basis. \nFurther details: \nInform Alex by email or message that you’d like to attend. \nMeet at 1pm. \nPark on the access road for Garn Lakes\, outside the parking area as there’s a barrier with timed closure at dusk. Grid reference SO234096. Lat/lon coordinates for GoogleMaps: 51.780506\, -3.110990. \nBring wind/waterproofs and additional warm clothing/hat/gloves as we will stop often for instruction and discussion. Also\, drinks/snacks as you desire. \nThere’s no need to bring a map. This will be provided. However\, if you have a subscription to OS Maps or similar on your mobile phone\, please bring this with you as it can help to embed your learning. \nWe will begin by learning to appreciate the landscape around us and our position in it. We will identify significant features and relate these to equivalent map symbols. We will orientate the map to align with the landscape and see our current position on the map. Walking forward\, we will practice maintaining awareness of our position as it changes. We may do this several times\, progressing from easier to more difficult parts of the landscape. We will begin to anticipate what is coming up ahead of us. Overall\, we will probably walk 3 miles or so on gentle terrain. We will be stopping often to discuss what we are practicing and learning. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Walk/Training: Bryn and Waun Rydd. 19km/12 miles\, 950m/3100ft ascent (Moderate)
DESCRIPTION:The first Sunday walk of the New Year. This walk will also be a training and practice session for ‘finding your way’ map-reading skills. It will be especially useful for those who participated in the first ‘finding your way’ training session last November. \nWe will start at 9:30am at the Nant Tarthwynni parking area alongside Talybont Resevoir. This is not the parking by the dam but around one kilometer further along the road\, grid reference SO 099196 (OS Explorer Map OL12). \nThis moderate walk of 19km/12miles with 950m/3100ft of ascent will take us through the Talybont Forest\, up to to Bryn (SO 071227)\, from where we will be able to see our further ascent onto the wild high plateau of Waun Rydd (SO 062206). Once on the plateau we have options\, according to progress. We will eventually descend via one of the ridges leading back to the start – either Twyn Du or Allt Llwyd. This will be in the dusk/dark so head torches are essential. \nA colder period of weather is expected\, with sub-zero temperatures and northerly winds. See the forecast for Waun Rydd. \nAs well as being a nice Winter walk\, we will practice ‘finding your way’ map-reading skills. You will need your own copy of OS Explorer map OL12. We will take the time to ensure that walkers know where they are and can follow along\, keeping note of their position as we proceed. Some prolonged stops are likely so it’s essential you have additional warm layers of clothing you can put on for these.

SUMMARY:Walk: Carreg Cadno and Fan Fraith (Fforest Fawr). 17.5km/11miles\, 610m/2000ft ascent (Moderate)
DESCRIPTION:A moderate walk of 17.5km/11miles with 610m/2000ft ascent. For the discerning hillwalker\, we explore rarely visited above-ground features in the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu National Nature Reserve. After attaining the rocky summit of Carreg Cadno we will proceed across the moor via Pant Mawr Pot and through the forest to head for the grassy summit of Fan Fraith\, a peak often overlooked in favour of its higher and more well-known neighbour. After Fan Fraith we will return across the moor to find limestone pavements\, and the locked entrance of the OFD cave below; finally descending back to the starting point via a disused quarry tramway with wood sleepers still in situ in places. \n  \nStart 10.00am.
\nStart 10.00am. Penwyllt Quarry. OS Explorer map OL12\, grid reference SN856155
