SUMMARY:Classic Walk: Pen y Fan Horseshoe. 14km/9miles\, 685m/2\,250ft ascent (Easy/Moderate)
DESCRIPTION:This classic horseshoe walk in the central Brecon Beacons begins at the Neuadd car park in the Taf Fechan Forest. \nThe walk is an opportunity for newer members and those interested in joining the Club to meet other Club members. After introductions\, we will set off to walk at a leisurely pace. There will be plenty of time to admire the views\, take photographs\, look at maps\, take refreshments\, etc. \nThe route is a ‘clockwise’ circuit\, ascending steeply at first to the plateau of Craig Fan Ddu. Here we turn to the north and follow the edge of the escarpment overlooking Blaen Taf Fechan\, the upper valley of one of the two branches of the River Taff. The ridge narrows and then broadens again as we approach Bwlch Duwynt (‘the col of the black wind’ – which\, on a windy day\, says it all!). Here we will mingle with those walkers climbing Corn Du and Pen y Fan from the Pont ar Daf side. We walk over Corn Du and Pen y Fan and then descend ‘Jacobs Ladder’\, downhill 220m to the col before the subsidiary summit of Cribyn. If your legs are still strong we’ll ascend and descend Cribyn. If not\, you can walk around and we will meet at the col on the far side where the Roman Road passes through. Here we will turn south and follow the Roman Road back to our starting point. \nClick on the venue link below for details of the starting point. Note that if you are approaching from the Heads of the Valley Road or the A470\, you will need to reach Pontsticill via Vaynor Road from Cefn Coed-y-cwmmer / Trefechan. For the time being\, access to Pontsticill via Pant is not possible due to local road closure. \nFor your safety and the safety of other members\, we advise minimum personal equipment requirements for all our walks.

We will drop NW to the tramroad that takes us back to Keeper’s Pond. From there we traverse the old coal tips towards Garn-yr-Erw. This year\, we’re staying closer to home in the Swansea Valley at the Glyntawe Outdoor Centre. Even if you don’t want to stay overnight\, come for the day to walk\, socialise\, and have fun. DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re staying the weekend at Glyntawe\, or just coming for the day\, today is an opportunity for those members that would like to practice aspects of mapping reading and compass work to find their way in the mountains. The session\, which will last all day but may not involve much distance\, will adapt to the needs and wishes of the participants as we find our way up to and through the remote and wild Carrog Goch area. Places to find could include Sinc y Giedd\, a WWII aircraft site\, various shakeholes\, waterfalls and river crossing points. Please OS map OL12 and a compass\, as well as your phone with an appropriate mapping app or a dedicated GPS device. \nExtra warm layers are advised for this day\, as we may spend significant periods standing still in the wind (but hopefully\, not the rain). \nFor your safety and the safety of other members\, we advise minimum personal equipment requirements for all our walks.
