SUMMARY:Classic Walk: Pen y Fan Horseshoe. 14km/9miles\, 685m/2\,250ft ascent (Easy/Moderate)
DESCRIPTION:This classic horseshoe walk in the central Brecon Beacons begins at the Neuadd car park in the Taf Fechan Forest. \nThe walk is an opportunity for newer members and those interested in joining the Club to meet other Club members. After introductions\, we will set off to walk at a leisurely pace. There will be plenty of time to admire the views\, take photographs\, look at maps\, take refreshments\, etc. \nThe route is a ‘clockwise’ circuit\, ascending steeply at first to the plateau of Craig Fan Ddu. Here we turn to the north and follow the edge of the escarpment overlooking Blaen Taf Fechan\, the upper valley of one of the two branches of the River Taff. The ridge narrows and then broadens again as we approach Bwlch Duwynt (‘the col of the black wind’ – which\, on a windy day\, says it all!). Here we will mingle with those walkers climbing Corn Du and Pen y Fan from the Pont ar Daf side. We walk over Corn Du and Pen y Fan and then descend ‘Jacobs Ladder’\, downhill 220m to the col before the subsidiary summit of Cribyn. If your legs are still strong we’ll ascend and descend Cribyn. If not\, you can walk around and we will meet at the col on the far side where the Roman Road passes through. Here we will turn south and follow the Roman Road back to our starting point. \nClick on the venue link below for details of the starting point. Note that if you are approaching from the Heads of the Valley Road or the A470\, you will need to reach Pontsticill via Vaynor Road from Cefn Coed-y-cwmmer / Trefechan. DESCRIPTION:Pete and Alex have put together “50k for 50 years” (50k50y)\, a route for a 50km/31miles one-day challenge walk on Saturday\, 27 June as part of the Club’s 50th anniversary celebrations. \nThe proposed route starts and finishes in Pontypool\, making an anticlockwise circuit of the hills above Pontypool\, Abersychan/Talywain and Blaenavon. In all\, a nice traverse of eleven summits (with distance from start)\, as follows: \n– Mynydd Garn Wen\, 4.9km\n– Mynydd Garnclochdy\, 6.7km\n– Mynydd y Garn-fawr\, 11.8km\n– Blorenge\, 14.2km\n– Mynydd Coety\, 24.3km\n– Mynydd Varteg Fawr\, 26.6km\n– Gwastad\, 30.6km\n– Byrgwm\, 32.8km\n– Mynydd Llanhilleth\, 34.6km\n– Cefn-y-Crib\, 37.9km\n– Mynydd Maen\, 44.5km \nWith an early start and 1\,250m/4\,100feet of ascent\, it will be a long day (15 hours); although hopefully one to remember. \nIf interested in taking part\, please get in touch with Pete. \nIf you’d like to walk just part of the route\, there is a regular and frequent bus-service (X24) in both directions between Pontypool and Blaenavon that allows you to join/leave the route at several points. Then following the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway to Gelligaer & Parc Penallta back to the start.\n16km/10miles\, 450m/ 1500 feet ascent. \nStart 9.10am at Ystrad Mynach train station.\nTrain departs at 9.25am\, cost £3.80.
